Tiveta AS accountant Lina Surkytė: Don't limit yourself and love what you do
Accounting is a profession that involves recording and analyzing financial transactions. It is a broad field with various responsibilities associated with it. As the name symbolizes, accountants help manage the financial components of organizations. The existence of accountants in organizations is essential as they play a crucial role in the smooth running of the business. They help determine product capital, financial resources, and production costs. They also help companies with planning, budgeting, auditing, reporting and cost control.
Today, we delve into Tiveta AS senior accountant‘s Lina Surkytė magical life. Ten years in the company. She, for sure, has something to say. Fasten your seatbelts.
When and under what circumstances did you and Tiveta AS meet?
Since our views and work values coincide, I can successfully celebrate this long-term friendship, which has been going on for a decade. I started working in the company in 2013. New challenges never scare me but always encourage me to move forward, thus expanding the limits of my possibilities, so when I received the offer to go to Norway, there was not even a thought or any doubt not to accept such an opportunity. Thus, little by little, sustainable and reliable relations with the company Tiveta AS were established. As a result, more and more new ideas were born, which allowed me to fulfill my obligations even better and to see my possibilities even more widely and clearly in order to achieve even greater goals. As we develop and develop a comprehensive, clear, and precise vision, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to participate in a successful growth process since the company's establishment.
What moment from that era do you remember the most? What were the biggest challenges you had to face in developing the company?
I wouldn't lie if I said that's all. And everything, from being able to celebrate every new project to the first mistakes made, allowed me to learn and constantly look for ways to stretch myself and not repeat them. Even then, we loudly and confidently created big plans for the future; we made the very system that would help us control the company's entire growth. Everything was new; it was a massive challenge because I had previously worked in a completely different sphere. And I'll admit, with the documents and their management, it wasn't as tricky as remembering the names of all the tools used in the construction industry.
What should a good accountant know in general?
In short, the accountant gradually becomes the preparer of declarations and reports and the system administrator, data analyst, and consultant. Who must first have a good knowledge of accounting, reporting, not getting lost in the numbers, paying attention to details, and properly handling all the company's financial data. But that alone is not enough. One of the most essential qualities of an accountant is responsibility and diligence. Even one zero digit missed or written down can sometimes cause a significant error in the report, and I'm not even talking about the orders being made.
What do you think is its impact on business success?
I am proud to have become a part of such an experienced team, where everyone, without exception, is given all the opportunities to lead and achieve the highest results. And it is the whole team that has the most significant influence on the business's success. Everyone's united look ahead and complementing each other and proper distribution of responsibilities. The desire not to compete but to achieve common goals.
The company recently turned ten years old. How has your work changed between when you started and now? How does technology make your job easier, and what will this function look like in 10 years?
A decade is not a short period; as a rapidly growing company, we are always interested in innovation and how we could improve our already-created system to remain competitive in the construction sector. As an example, it used to be necessary to pay each invoice by making separate orders. Still, now the systems are improving so much that documents can be processed by accounting programs where, with the click of a few buttons, you can not only pay all the invoices but also detail them and receive various reports. The accountant must understand where specific data goes and manage those systems correctly and responsibly. Observing the pace at which everything is improving, it is even hard to imagine what it will be like in another ten years; I only know one thing: that we will definitely keep up with the latest technologies.
What motivates you the most to achieve the maximum?
A personal desire to improve and grow, and a sense of trust and support from the team.
Let's review your typical day's schedule. How does it look like?
Like everyone else, my typical day starts with a cup of coffee and a plan for the day. Each job has its deadline when and by when it must be done.
You work in the office of Tiveta AS in Klaipėda branch. Tell us more about your co-workers and their functions. Are you an easygoing team? Do you have some traditions that keep the team connected?
Our team in the Klaipėda office is not very large; we are colleagues and friends; we can share our personal joys and ask for help when needed. I am glad he is also growing, and new people are joining the team with whom it is good to work. Every year, we organize a Christmas party, where we can chat with our families and children and celebrate a good year. We don't miss celebrating birthdays either.
What advice would you give to people who dream of becoming accountants?
Don't limit yourself, and love what you do.
How do you relax in your free time from work?
All my free time is dedicated to my family. We spend it as usefully as possible so that no day passes in vain.
What are your plans for the future? Are you looking for further career heights as an accountant?
I love what I do and would like it to always be like now; I feel in my place. Everything I do - I do it with great enthusiasm. The words my grandfather once told me stuck: Lina, you are like a sea; there is a lot of you everywhere, and you can never predict what else you will come up with. So today, I am happy where I am, what I am doing, and what will happen tomorrow, no one knows.
What is your credo in life?
If not now, when? Which always reminds me how important it is to be present to live life.
If I were to ask you which three people on the planet would you most like to have dinner with, who would they be and why?
Ruta Lee, Nick Vujicic - people who motivate to live and boldly pursue their goals. I would also like Ričardas Doveika (famous Lithuanian priest) to join, whose sermons help to calm down, stop when necessary, and listen to what the inner voice says.
Do you have authority? Who is he or they? Do you associate happiness in life with him?
Yes, this is my family, I am thrilled to have such a close bond. I know they will always understand, support, and, if necessary, help me make the right decisions.
And finally, the last question. Tiveta AS continues to grow like wildfire. What future do you foresee for the company in the Norwegian market?
The best, I always knew and was sure that Tiveta's name would be widely known in the construction sector, that it would grow and not stop growing.
