Exterior wall

The main principle of a classic timber framed wall is a wooden structure consisting of high-quality wood studs. The gaps between the frames are filled with air-tight elements using high-performance insulation and appropriate plasterboard coatings on both interior and exterior side.

Timber framed walls usually ensure higher level of thermal insulation compared to brick walls of similar thickness. However, a reduced mass of the wall means that the insulation materials must possess better acoustic properties.

Structure

The frame consists of vertical studs and horizontal members. All these structural elements must be made of durable quality timber. Studs of 48 x 150 mm are usually used in buildings. In order to increase the insulation layer, studs of larger dimensions can be used.

Insulation

Mineral wool insulation is installed between timber studs allowing for future installation of additional insulation not only on the internal surface of the wall but also in the wall cavity to further enhance thermal performance of the insulation.

Airtightness

Airtightness is crucial to ensure proper protection of timber components throughout their service life. Timber frames made of organic materials can create a perfect environment for mold to grow when moisture, oxygen and warm temperature affect the interior space all at the same time. It is important to allow timber frames to dry properly in this way preventing water vapor from passing from the interior space through the entire structure. Airtightness is also vital for efficient sound insulation. While the majority of joints are filled with standard fillers, the gaps within the partition or lining, floor or ceiling or other small air inlets can be filled using certified sealants.

Partition joints

Additional studs to obtain required structural connections can be installed at the joints with interior partitions.
